French Language Study
Students commence the study of French in Grade 1, which is taught as a second language.
As directed under the KHDA and the UAE’s Ministry of Education, all Uptown School students undertake the study of Arabic.
Language Support and Mother Tongue Maintenance
At Uptown School the language of instruction is English. Our international student population holds passports from 85 countries and speaks 20 different mother tongue languages. We offer language support to assist students whose first language is not English. As an IB school we encourage students to understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories as well as those of others, and to be open to differing values, perspectives and traditions. With this in mind, Uptown School recognizes the dual goals of increasing English fluency when required and the importance of mother tongue maintenance and support.
Maintaining and developing language and literacy skills in the mother tongue is valued at Uptown School; dedicated time is provided in the curriculum to pursue these studies. Mother tongue maintenance classes are offered according to the demographic demand at school year to year and the willingness of parents to be involved in the classroom programme.
